Since I'm new here I don't know if this has been discussed before but thought we could give our favorite Pig songs or versions thereof. For me, aside from the thirty minute renditions of songs like Lovelight,Hard To Handle, and Good Lovin',which are brilliant in their own right, I would venture to choose Two Souls In Communion. I particularly like the one from 5-11-72, but they are all amazingly touching and well sung. His voice on this song is so sweet and soft, the complete opposite of songs like the ones I mentioned before. He really gets to show his talent and versatility and his capability to tug on your heart strings on this one. Anyone else want to share a Pig favorite?

I really like operator. Nice studio version of Easy Wind is a killer too.

Live his interactions with Jerry (eg, Midnight Hr "play your guitar" stuff) really get too.

One of my favs along these lines, and right now I can't for the life of me recall when it's from, but they are coming out of a jam and clearly trying to figure out where to go next, and you hear Phil and Jerry hit a few suggestive notes of LLight, and then Pig says "oh NO you don't!" as if he had already conveyed that he didn't want to do it, but just as he says that, they appear to take great delight in ignoring his plea and rip into it with great energy and he is swept up into a fine performance...

Silly story, but the dynamics of them interacting like that always make it seem more personal...

What--no love at all for Good Morning Little Schoolgirl from anyone so far? No one version leaps to mind, but I love the blues jamming on that one.

You can't go wrong with 2-28-69, of course.

This one is the second-to-last time Pig sung it and he has a great swing to his delivery. There's also some fierce slide guitar:

While you're there, stick around for the New Speedway Boogie.

I think I like to hear Pig do Easy Wind or Hard to Handle (the first number I actually saw him perform) more than anything else. I never tire of raving about the 6/24/70 NFA > Easy Wind late show opener--if you're not familiar with it, the time has come, 20 minutes of Power and Glory:

As for a whole show, a favorite early Pigfest is 11/19/66:

Set 1

Cold Rain And Snow
Hi-Heel Sneakers
Pain In My Heart
Beat It On Down The Line
Cream Puff War
Same Thing
He Was A Friend Of Mine
Dancin' In The Street

Set 2

Smokestack Lightnin' ->
King Bee
Midnight Hour

there is a grate Pigpen Compilation (2CD's)
at bt.etree torrent site. Here's the info >>

Grateful Dead
Primal Pigpen Blues - A Pigpen Compilation

Lineage:
Various SBDs> shn> wav> CD> wav> FLAc Frontend

Disk 1 / Set I:

03. Chinatown Shuffle - 72-04-14 - Copenhagen, Denmark

05. Easy Wind - 70-12-31 - Winterland
06. The Same Thing - 67-03-18 - Winterland
07. It Hurts Me Too - 67-10-22 - Winterland

03. Next Time You See Me - 72-04-26 - Frankfurt, Germany

09. Turn On Your Lovelight - 68-02-14 - Carousel Ballroom
Encore:
10. Hey Jude - 69-03-01 - Fillmore West

This is a mix I made from my collection a while back. In my mind, it showcases the "essential" Pigpen
in all his glory. If you want raw blues and epic raps, I think that this compilation covers mostly all of
the ground needed to showcase the different sides of Ron McKernan.

Aside from all the obvious choices, I really enjoy Pigpen's version of Searchin' and Big Boy Pete, two songs that were only rarely played. Check out Searchin here:

And Big Boy Pete here:

I also really like the rarity I'm A Hog For You.

As much as I love the extended songs (my first exposure and what turned me on to the Dead was 'Lovelight' from Live/Dead), especially Midnight Hour, I've really got to like the shorter, more concise numbers:- Mr. Charlie (there are some great versions from various concerts here on the Internet Archive), Chinatown Shuffle, Next Time You See Me and similar. REALLY LOVE American Beauty's 'Operator' and - with Christmas not that far away - not mentioning 'Run, Run, Rudolph' would be a crime. That's why I can't get my head round everyone going overboard re: Cornell University (77?) and later shows ........ no Pigpen so can't be that great ......... 70, 71 & 72 are the ones. God bless you Pigpen, wherever you are.

I was lucky to see Pigpen do a great Easy Wind in 1970 at the Carousel Ballroom, I checked... don't think it circulates.

I'll listen to the other suggestions above.
